2007 Grants and Scholarships
This year the Community Foundation of the Virginias, Inc., awarded 52 grants and scholarships to charitable organizations and students in Mercer County, West Virginia and Tazewell County, Virginia. These awards, in the amount of $115,561, represent the Foundation’s eleventh annual grants cycle in support of area non-profit groups that strive to meet changing needs of our society, and students seeking to further their education.
The twelve-member Grants Committee is chaired by Betty Gardner Bailey, and has the responsibility of evaluating more than 70 grant requests and allocating funds according to need, and presenting its recommendations to the Foundation Board of Directors in September.
Carol Dodson heads the Scholarship Committee, which has nine members. The Committee evaluated more than 70 applications this year and recommended that scholarships be awarded to 35 college-bound high school seniors and college students. At its May meeting the Foundation Board approved the Committee's recommendation.
