Grants and Scholarships

In its 13 years of grant making the Community Foundation has distributed nearly $600,000 in grants to worthwhile community organizations and projects, and scholarships to deserving students.

Below is information about the Foundation's Grants Program and Scholarship Program.

Grantmaking

At its September meeting the Foundation's Board of Directors approved 29 grants for 2009 totaling just over $30,000 for projects and organizations in Mercer County and Tazewell County.

Due to the poor investment climate in 2008, the Foundation was less able to fund worthwhile applicants, or was forced to make awards at reduced levels this year.

The Grants Committee is composed of twelve members, and is chaired by Foundation President Bob Perkinson. The Committee is charged with the responsibility of evaluating all grant requests, and to the best of its ability allocate the funds according to need.

Most of the recipients are graduating seniors at high schools in Mercer, Tazewell and other nearby counties, while others are college students who qualified to receive continuing scholarship support.

At its May meeting, the Foundation Board of Directors approved recommendations for awards totaling more than $39,000 from 15 endowed funds established to assist area students in financing their education.
