Grants and Scholarships

 

 

In its more than 20 years of grant making the Community Foundation has supported dozens of worthwhile community organizations and projects, and hundreds of deserving students with scholarship assistance. With the inclusion of the 2016 awards, the Foundation has returned $1,475,000 to the area since 1997 in grants and scholarships.

Grant making

 

 

The Community Foundation of the Virginias, Inc. is pleased to announce the award of 40 grants for 2016. These awards totaling more than $74,000 represent the Foundationís 20th annual grant cycle supporting local nonprofit groups.

 

With the inclusion of the 2015 awards, the Foundation has returned $1,475,000 to the area since 1997 in grants and scholarships.

 

The Grants Committee is chaired by Robert Perkinson and comprised of: Mary Jo Babbitt, Marie Blankenship, Kathleen Blaydes, Carole Dodson, Kermit Moore, Doris Sue Kantor.

 

Information for Grant Seekers

 

The Foundation accepts Grant applications from April through June each year.

 

The Community Foundation of the Virginias, Inc., awards discretionary and field-of-interest grants to charitable organizations for Education; The Arts, Culture and the Humanities; Health; and Human Services, located in or serving Mercer County, WV and Tazewell County, VA.

Scholarships

 

The Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of the Virginias, Inc. met in May, and approved scholarship recommendations from the Scholarship Committee for students who are graduating seniors at high schools in Mercer, McDowell and Fayette counties in West Virginia, and Tazewell County, Virginia, or are college students who have been awarded a scholarship on a continuing basis.

 

Scholarship recipients are chosen through a competitive application process by the Scholarship Committee, which is chaired by Carole Dodson, with members Gene Bailey,  Mary Raub  and Bettye VanDyke.

 

Eighteen individual endowed funds awarded scholarships totaling more than $101,000. The scholarships were awarded to graduating seniors at eight area high schools, and to students attending 17 different colleges and universities.

Applying for Scholarships in 2017

 

The online Scholarship Application is now available for use, and the application period is open until March 31, 2017.

 

To begin the application process, follow this link, and follow the instructions for "Create New Account."
