Since
1983, Dollar Energy Fund has been working to meet its mission to improve the
quality of life for households experiencing hardships by providing utility
assistance and other services that lead to self-sufficiency. The organization
works with utility companies and their customers to provide assistance in a
four-state area, including West Virginia. Since 2008 West Virginians have
received assistance from Dollar Energy Fund, operating as the West Virginia
Utility Assistance Program (WVUAP).
A $2,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Virginia's Fund for Mercer County assisted the WVUAP in assisting 158 Mercer County households, totaling 452 people, with utility assistance totaling more than $40,000 in the 2010-11 program year.
Program-wide during the 2010-11 year-to-date, the program has provided grants to 2,469 applicants, and provided 264 service restorations. Among those recipients, five percent receive unemployment income, six percent are on public assistance, seven percent were households with seniors, and 13 percent had no income at all.
The Dollar Energy Fund, through the WVUAP, helps West Virginians in need with private money, which is what private charity is all about.
The Community Foundation is pleased to have helped with this worthy project.
